Maybe check out some asian inspired dragons to get an initial design. Or maybe some northern Eroupean styles from the middle ages and stylize to have a more organic line quality. This may possibly give you a more nouveau affect. Have one designed or research images. Combo.

Tis true. I have two women laying together on my inner upper arm done Mucha-style representing Gemini. I handed the initial idea over with a postcard with Mucha artwork to the artist and it came out like a champ.
If you're in the bay area I highly recommend Theresa at staircase tattoo on ocean st in santa cruz.

I'm in the U.k. , Thanx for the pointers I have a great artist to work with & a little artistic talent myself so we will hopefully be able to work out something original if I can't source anything , I have always wanted a dragon but not an oriental one (too many about ) and alot of the "sci-fi" ones are a bit strange looking !

Great choice inky. I have two dragons, both asian. Around here (cali) it's slightly novel to have actually had them done by an old asian guy. Most ink slingers here are tweakers who can doodle, charge $125 an hour and call themselves artistes.
With your same flair for not wanting something generic (your sci-fi comment cracked me up) I had a mountain lion done on my back in watercolor style instead of the traditional outline/fill-in manner.
But now you have me curious and I gotta search. I cant think of ever seeing an animal at all in nouveau! Hmmmm...

Some birds - peacocks and the like I've seen.

Since we're talking tats - I'd like to get one, but have no idea how much for a good one. It will be about the size of a CD, between my shoulder blades, and mucha/art nouveau style, with color. I still need to have it designed, and am wondering if you might know how much I should expect to spend.

Hi NT... I'd ballpark your piece at about $200. If it's your first piece pick a design and sit on it for 6 months. If you arent sick of looking at it or it hasnt changed in that time go for it!! Please be picky about what artist you use and get references. What flash a guy or girl has in their book doesnt necessarily represent their ability, only the finished products. Good luck!

I have to agree with "sitting on a design for 6 months " espesially if its a large piece , also reserching your tattooist , I have learnt from my own mistake in that department ! also costs depend on the tattooist too , I can only speak from U.K. experience but generaly you get what you pay for ! I am currently paying £40 per hour (or for my next session 2 special tropical trees ) but over here some artists are chargeing upto £80 per hour so it varies a great deal . some artists are better at some styles than others . but the best idea is to speak to customers whove used that tattooist , look at the work and ask plenty of questions ! good luck !

i hear you on desiring a dragon of unique quality~
i've though much about getting a coiling dragon
wrapping about my hips...but hard to create a design
      that really resonates.
      good luck darling...

The only picture of a dragon I've ever seen is an illustration he did in 1892 which is reproduced on page 58 of "The Master of Art Nouveau Alphonse Mucha" written by his son Jiri Mucha and published by Knihtisk in Prague in 1966. It was published in english by The Hamlyn Publishing Group Ltd. in 1967

Check out Alphonse Mucha's "Documents Decoratifs" and "Figures Decoratifs" which are both published by the afore mentioned Dover publishing for more great Art Nouveau design ideas.

As for dragons, there is an interesting one by Maxfield Parrish on page 33 of "Maxfield Parrish" by Coy Ludwig, published in 1973. Across from it is an illustration of a giant snake. There are also some great dragons by Frank Frazetta, although I can't find the book just now.
