I've loved art nouveau since childhood. My mother found that bewildering. She would say, 'But it's so grotesque!' And I would say, 'Yes, that's what I like about it.' For me it's an fascinating combination of beauty and a kind of ugliness that provides a richer appeal than mere prettiness. And the 'lines' in the architecture seem very friendly and living to me. What do others say?

College introduced me to art nouveau..or I should say, I knew beforehand I liked it, but I never knew what it was until I started on my art courses. I've never found it ugly at all, but sublimely beautiful in it's organic design, complex and compelling. As you say, it seems 'alive'. I can't really put into words well what it is about it that I love, I simply do.

I have always loved art nouveau (here in Belgium we have a lot of it). It's the only architecture that can move me to tears...

I am a Victorianist at heart and although I love that era, I'm not such a fan of the interior design (too many knick-knacks and lace). The Art Nouveau era is the perfect bridge of 19th century romantic visions and 20th century modernity. I find it perfect in that regard. Not to mention the colors--natural, fantasy-like, muted, romantic and just plain yummy.

What do I love about Art Nouveau?
For me, it's sentimental, but also so much more. As a kid my mother had this new-agey friend, Chandra (who has since changed her name and current incarnation about 3 times!) and her home was overflowing with Nouveau pieces. She had Mucha prints everywhere, interesting tapestry's on the ceiling, tables, on windows, everywhere! She had Lalique style jewelry and Tiffany style lamps (not sure if they were original's) and many long gowns with a dazzling aray of deep, earthy tones in the most bizarre patterns. Similar to Klimpt's work. She and her home always smelled of sandelwood and myrhh. She had zodiacs depicitng nude bodies in odd contortions and everywhere I looked there was some fascinating something or other to take in visually, olfactorily, texturally, etc.

So, when I got my first apartment I set out to recreate a similar feeling. A few years later I happened to work in an art print and framing shop and spent most of every paycheck there! I began with Mucha prints (many of which are now out of print), then Klimpt, then Beardsley and discovered i also loved the pre-Raphealites and began collecting Waterhouse. My current home was built in 1934, and the architecture is a little confused- part deco, part nouveau. Lots of arches and arched doorways coupled with odd angles. I haven't done much to it other than paint and accesorize. But, I continued with that odd combination in my decor. I have an area rug with dizzying geometrical designs all in deep, earthy and also jewel tones, but I have furniture and pillows with beads, velvets and luxurious throws and such.

Somehow or another, it all works- for me, anyway.

There's just something about that time period that speaks to me. The art, of course, but everything else too.... Maybe I was there. Who knows?

....it is a combination of realism, illustration, nature and whimsy.....now i am not big on realism....really what is the point....just take a photo......but nouveau conections to realism seem like a combination of inner and external beauty represented in a true form......the illustration aspect is the defining difference between this style and other art of the period.....it is the subtle outline work that is so distinct......not a photo...a piece of art.....constructed in layers......designed with passion.......now the nature aspect...unlike the stiff angles of decco art nouveau is a flowing ebb of mystical organic flux.......it intertwines like like a briar......seems to grow endlessly...this is why the wooden furnature is so appealing...it seems as though the tree was meant for it....and the whimsy....there is a magical calming serenity allowing one to feel as though they have entered the "nouveau dimension" and like a special place in a favorite story book it is a realm you do not want to leave.....

what is it we love about art nouveau?
The organic shapes, art over design, the energy in it of breaking out of a mental mold of the time with creativity. To see craftsmanship taken entirely into the realm of making art while still having drawers that can open and chairs which don't collapse.
I think the wood is the best of it for me but I do have a taste for just about everything else done in the style.

I find it very liberating as a designer. It is far more than just a "style". Art Nouveau embodies The Natural Aesthetic better than any other approach to Art & Design. Sure, in many applications it might not be appropriate, and it can be used to excess..... yet I gravitate towards projects (such as Garden Architecture) where it can be lavishly explored.

It's the line, the flowing lines, movement, passion,"visible waves of erotic vertigo" to quote Robert Melville.
It reaches back and embraces Celtic and Nordic Design too,not to mention Islamic Calligraphy.

its the organic flow, and randomness that i find utter beautiful. Like a sprinkle of butterflies. The movement and energy of the architecture, furniture, art.. the sensuality of it all.. just gets inside my soul and like a lover, excites me and fills me with joy.

it just radiated poetry...it was easy to relate, even though half of it was for advertisement.
Plays, booze, and what have you, it still had like a secret that the editors and the printers couldnt hear...

I love the unrestrained and unapologetic sensuality of Art Nouveau. It's ripe organic heritage in all it's antecedents keep one in touch with the Earth and the senses, something sorely lacking in most manufactured goods of today. Hand crafted and lovingly executed as if an echo of the muse herself, and all her feminine power. I strive in my pieces ,not to recreate an era ,but to explore new unique original designs,in sync with the same motivating spirit that fired those creative imaginations at the turn of the 19th century.
