Re: i am doing an essay on how art nouveau inspired the designs of laliques jewellery
Tue, January 10, 2006 - 3:11 PMMyia,I have an extensive Art Nouveau library, since I use many references before I design a piece.I would ask the essay question slightly differently; How did Laliques designs influence Art Nouveau? If there's a certain book you need,I may have it...Otherwise ask Frank. -

Re: i am doing an essay on how art nouveau inspired the designs of laliques jewellery
Tue, January 10, 2006 - 3:33 PMI'm not sure I can help you. If it was Horta or one of the metal guys ,probably, but the glass artists are not my strong point. Ask Frank who moderates the Pre-Raphaelites Tribe(he's also in my friends network). He's got degrees in this stuff and is accessible and nice. If he refers you to a certain book, I may have it and I could look up something quick for you but that's about it. Did you ask Kimberly, our moderator? She usually answers e-mail at night I think... -

Re: i am doing an essay on how art nouveau inspired the designs of laliques jewellery
Tue, January 10, 2006 - 5:11 PMI must be getting senile,I'm sorry I alluded to glass. In my mind I had him associated with Tiffany.I'm doing your reading for you now I'm afraid. He was THE great innovator and introduced many varied techniques to jewelry making.Up to that point it was pretty much just diamonds and settings but with the salon of 1895 at the musee du Luxembourg(which might actually be in Paris)he hit the big-time.As a child he was always fascinated with the beauty of nature;flowers trees, plants consumed his interest for hours(that's how it starts) and because he studied this stuff so carefully, he was able to reproduce the immaculate STRUCTURE and translate the natural beauty into original jewelry pieces. His innovations with technique were eclipsed only by the introduction of a variety of semi-precious as well as precious jewels.Coral ,agate, jet and jasper, mother of pearl, opals onyx just to mention a few. Then he got into enameling in a big way.many new techniques were introduced from Japan ,especially in metal working.Lost wax casting, chasing ,carving, saw piercing, patinating, engraving and stamping to name a few.more later... -

Tue, January 10, 2006 - 5:16 PMYou have to verify EVERYTHING I tell you. Don't assume it's correct until you check it out for yourself.I can point you in the right direction but it's up to you to make the journey. There is tons of stuff on this guy.The only other guy who comes close to having as big an impact on jewelry of the time is Wolfers.

Re: i am doing an essay on how art nouveau inspired the designs of laliques jewellery
Tue, January 10, 2006 - 6:21 PMYou've got to mention Japan somewhere in your paper because it had a huge influence on Art Nouveau especially in Paris. There was this cool Jewish guy named Bing, who opened a gallery that sold all sorts of handmade everyday pieces, like a boutique, along with Japanese prints. They have a different orientation about color, line, composition and perspective.Japan was isolationist for many years and opened up in the 1850s.To the west their art was fresh, exotic new...To them ,it was the same stuff they'd been perfecting for THOUSANDS of years.Seen the last Samurai with Tom Cruise? It's about that opening. Not necessarily all that good for the Japanese.Anyway, this guy Bing is an entrepeneur in Paris and has these Japanese prints which by the way have nudity(OMG) and everybody ,mostly artists can't get enough...Big influence on Van Gogh,Degas,Lautrec Manet,Gaugin etc. Suddenly ,EVERYTHING Japanese is in. Bing brings craftsmen from Japan to Paris and everybody is bloody well amazed, and rightly so. Craftsmanship on this level BECOMES art...more later, I gotta eat. Your gonna owe me Big time when this is over... -

Re: i am doing an essay on how art nouveau inspired the designs of laliques jewellery
Wed, January 11, 2006 - 9:58 AMSiegfried Bing b.1838 Hamburg, Germany. He was not a potter. His family manufactured porcelain in France for export to Germany. It was a very successful business after he morphed it to producing well designed and attractive decorative arts pieces for the home. They won all sorts of awards for excellence in both design AND manufacture. One innovation was firing in coal fired kilns(high fire)making a stronger product while increasing efficiency and production. Philippe Wolfers is often compared to Lalique as a strong influence on Art Nouveau. He was in Belgium. Brussels itself became a hotbed of art Nouveau. My hero Victor Horta came from there originally. OK, what else? -
