Victor Horta was an architect who designed many art nouveau buildings, many in Brussels. I just visited his home-turned-museum a week ago and it was really something. I might scan a postcard and post it here. They have a lot of fine art nouveau style buildings in Brussels which was a nice surprise. I'm more into the architecture side of the movement, although I really like the fine art as well.

Fri, January 9, 2004 - 3:46 AM...And let's not forget Vienna. Yes, I've come to learn that Brussels was major in the movement. I had been there 2 or 3 times previously but never looked into that. The other big surprise that I've heard mentioned is that Glasgow was major as well. What do I know? Well, I do know that the unsung gem of the Art Nouveau movement in terms of architecture is Helsinki. Believe it!

Re: Victor Horta
Sat, January 10, 2004 - 5:08 AMNow there is one photo of the museum posted. Actually, Brussels doesn't take very good care of it's old buildings. One of Paul Hankar's Art Nouveau buildings was even EMPTY - as in, no one living there or using the space. The "Old England" building which is now the music instrument museum was only designated protected in the '90s. No city I have visited or heard about has Art Nouveau buildings all over the place and Brussels is no exception. They are there but you have to go seeking. -

Re: Victor Horta
Sun, May 28, 2006 - 1:24 PMBrussels had a lot more art nouveau houses, but most of them were tore down, even from Victor Horta... It's terrible! Even nowadays a lot of the still existing houses aren't protected.
