hello fellow lovers of art nouveau... I recently came across a site for a modern artist working in an art noveau influenced style and I wanted to share it with you. Her name is Esther Sanchez and she has some examples of her work up at www.esthersanchez.com. Great lines and beautiful fluidity... I just wish that there were more examples here!!

It's like art noveau for the tragically hip. I like it. A new look at an old style.

Interesting artwork, but I must say I think it owes its look much more to Japanese prints (the flower motifs in the background) and late fifties/early sixties animation and Illustration (the line quality).

Art Nouveau is characterized by a much more stable line technique with heavier external outlines seperating the forground object from the background. Inside this their is typically a hierarchy of line weights stepping down with the line weight diminishing as the element it deliniates diminishes in importance.

Art Nouveau was heavily influenced by Japanese prints as well, and I can definitely see the late fifties/early sixties animation and illustration conparison, but it does have the art nouveau flavor/influence. Many of the psycodelic poster art by Bill Graham and other artists from the sixties has a real art nouveau flavor and when looking at Esther Sanchez's work, I saw a lot of the same qualities.

First of all Your image is a picture of Hedy Lamarr. I'm your slave for life. (Hedy, as you undoubtably know, was anything but stupid) There's only one thing better than a pretty girl... a smart, pretty girl.

Back to the topic, the psychedelic posters you refer to were for the Filmore auditorium (which was run by Bill Graham) the posters themselves were made by numerous artist an did, certainly, reflect the Art Nouveau influence. You're also right about the japanese influence. What I was trying to say was just that Esther's work contains influences from more than one source.

          Anyway, the Hedy thing rocks!

Thank you. Hedy was quite the woman. Definitely a woman to look up to.

Thanks for the info...I've heard them refered to as Bill Graham posters for so long that I had made him the artist in my head. I agree in regards to Esther's work, I didn't mean to sound like I was contradicting you, just eleborating a little bit more I guess.

            Hedy does rock! ;)
